Moxibustion for Breech

  • Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment which uses a chinese herb called ‘Moxa’ or ‘Mugwort’. The Moxa is compressed into a cigar-like stick and lit and held over the Bladder 67 acupuncture point located at the base of the little toe nail. TCM theory suggests that by warming the Bladder 67 meridian (energy line) that runs through the uterus, it encourages the baby to become more energised and active, turning towards the heat source into a head down position. Amazing!

  • The appointment will start with explanations and demonstrations of pelvic balancing exercises to encourage a cephalic (head down) position. I will then teach you and your partner / support person to carry out moxibustion as it requires continuing at home. For this reason, a support person who is willing to perform moxibustion daily for 10 days (or twice daily for 5 days) MUST come with you to the appointment.

Most people report that the therapy is very relaxing and calming. I use charcoaled ‘smokeless’ Moxa sticks, making it more suitable for use in my studio and in your home. I provide you with the supply of Moxa to take home along with full instructions.

The treatment will end with a hypnosis script for breech presentation.

  • Moxibustion is around 65-67% successful in turning a breech baby as opposed to 40-60% for an External Cephalic Version (ECV).

Some research however suggests the success rate for Moxibustion can be as high as 72.5%!

If you decide to have an ECV, moxibustion can help make the procedure more successful.

  • Moxibustion can only be done if breech is confirmed either by scan or documented in your notes by your midwife / obstetrician. Whilst it is generally classed as safe, it should be avoided in certain situations, such as:

-Your obstetrician has deemed you unsuitable for ECV

-You have high blood pressure or diabetes requiring medication

-You have a low lying placenta, placenta praevia, vaginal bleeding, or any other pregnancy complication

-You have had a previous caesarean section or uterine surgery

-There is an abnormal fluid volume around the baby, or your baby is known to have health problems

-You are having a multiple pregnancy

-Your baby is in an unstable position and regularly keeps changing position

Get in touch to discuss suitability if you are unsure

If your baby is in a breech (upside down) position and you are wishing to avoid medical intervention, then moxibustion is a non-invasive, calming and relaxing way to help turn a breech baby, with a very good success rate. This treatment involves pelvic balancing techniques to aid an optimal position, moxibustion and hypnosis, along with thorough teaching, instructions and supplies to continue this course at home for 10-14 treatments. I will also contact you to follow up.

Please contact me to arrange a suitable date and time for moxibustion as I appreciate it may need a last minute slot, or time outside of my usual clinic hours for the nature of this treatment.
